Russian Doukhobor Villages 1845 to 1899
Caucasus Mountains & Crimean Regions
(Modern Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey)
About This Virtual Earth Map
Village names and location markers as seen on this map have been determined from various sources. We are still verifying a number of placenames, a process somewhat complicated by the numerous village name changes that have taken place over time. Many placename marker locations have been calibrated or verified using Soviet era topographical maps, while others have simply been estimated from Microsoft Virtual Earth Maps and Google Earth online. We are using the Virtual Earth map model rather than Google Map for this webpage simply because of its superior coverage for this part of the world. Even so, historical Doukhobor settlements in the Kars area of Turkey have not as yet been identified on this map.
We have developed this virtual map to offer our visitors a general bird's-eye overview of historical Doukhobor settlement locations. We encourage you to visit Jonathan Kalmakoff's excellent Doukhobor Gazetteer for detailed placename descriptions and more precise geographic co-ordinates.
